Retrofit of sports pavilion changing facility at CEM Aristides Maillol, Barcelona

Architects: Luis Beriain lbs Arquitectura ) with MAGMA ARQUITECTURA (Beriain, Cicero, Coma) /  Client: Ajuntament de Barcelona, Districte de Les Corts /  Date: 2009.

At the Arístides Maillol Municipal Sports Centre, the retrofit of the existing changing room building was carried out to bring it into compliance with current regulations regarding accessibility, thermal comfort, and energy efficiency. Since the entire changing room area is built against the terrain, beneath the new artificial turf field, and the existing ceiling height was already at its minimum, all new mechanical systems (ductwork and equipment) were designed to run along the exterior of the building’s only façade, creating a double skin. A large technical volume cantilevers across the entire building, and its supporting legs define the tangential access points to the new facilities, which include six group changing rooms along with their corresponding service areas.
